Screening of My Brooklyn

If you missed the Turner Field Community Benefits Coalition’s screening of My Brooklyn earlier this month, then you have another chance to catch a screening.  The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority is hosting a screening at the end of the month. My Brooklyn is a documentary about Director Kelly Anderson’s personal journey, as a Brooklyn “gentrifier,” to understand the forces reshaping her neighborhood along lines of race and class.  The film will be followed by a discussion on the different ways community residents can get involved in addressing the causes and effects of gentrification.

City makes housing affordable in Mechanicsville

Low-income residents looking for affordable housing in Atlanta got a boost recently with the construction of new homes in Mechanicsville.

Builders Summech Community Development Corporation and Columbia Residential teamed up with the city and the state of Georgia to construct 66 single family homes and renovate eight existing houses for people for affordable dwellings. The 74 houses will be available for rent for the next 15 years, but tenants can purchase them when that period ends.


City of Atlanta celebrates launch of Mechanicsville Cityside Project

Mayor Kasim Reed and the Department of Planning and Community Development announced today the launch of the Mechanicsville Cityside initiative, the first scattered site development in the City of Atlanta. The project offers newly-built or renovated homes with affordable rents for working families. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mechanicsville Cityside, Mayor Reed was joined by Georgia Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Camila Knowles, Department of Planning and Community Development Commissioner Tim Keane, SUMMECH Development Corporation Executive Director Janis Ware and Atlanta City Councilmember Cleta Winslow.

“Partnerships between the City, the State and the private sector are essential tools for creating quality, affordable housing options and opportunities in every neighborhood in Atlanta,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “This new program will offer housing stability for more than 70 families, and help make the dream of homeownership a reality.”

The Mechanicsville Cityside development aims to provide homeownership opportunities for low-income families. The families will rent the units for the first fifteen years of occupancy, and will then have the opportunity to purchase the home. Scattered site developments distribute affordable housing units in income-diverse neighborhoods, promoting greater economic inclusion. The Cityside development is spread over one square mile of land in the southeast Atlanta neighborhood.


Atlanta Mayor Reed cuts ribbon on redevelopment, home-ownership initiative

A once-blighted section of the city of Atlanta is getting a new look, and in the process, its residents are getting a shot at owning a home in their community.

Mayor Kasim Reed helped cut the ribbon Thursday on a development called Mechanicsville Cityside, an initiative made possible through a public-private partnership.

The development includes 66 new homes on those sites and rehabilitate eight other properties in an 18-block area. , helping to create home ownership opportunities for low-income families.

All 74 properties will start out as rentals, but in 15 years, tenants will have the opportunity to buy the homes at a deep discount under rules of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program.


Affordable housing development opens near Turner Field

Atlanta and state leaders on Thursday celebrated the opening of an affordable housing community near Turner Field that officials say will ease the crunch on quality workforce housing.

Mechanicsville Cityside isn’t an apartment complex, but rather 74 new or refurbished detached homes available under a lease-purchase program. It’s a new type of product for the city, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said, and one he said will make more housing available for working-class families.

Loss of Long-Standing Community Member


Unfortunately we have some sad news to report–our neighbor, Ms. Eva Perdue succumbed to a long struggle with cancer on Friday, September 30, 2016. Ms. Perdue was a long-standing community member and was also one of the daughters of Mr. Moody, the founder and first president of the Mechanicsville Civic Association. Ms. Perdue is survived by her partner Nagejuan Hernandez, who resides at 254 Doane Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30315.

The family is seeking the community’s assistance with Ms. Perdue’s funeral arrangements. Members of the community who wish to assist with the cost of funeral and memorial services may contact Goolsby Mortuary at 1375 Jonesboro Road, Atlanta, GA 30315 or by phone at (404) 588-0128.

Proposed APD Camera Locations for Mechanicsville

As a follow up to September’s MCA meeting, Lt. Myers sent over where APD and APF have proposed camera locations throughout Zone 3. I’ve gone ahead and pulled out the section covering Mechanicsville. Lt. Myers wanted us to know that these are not set and stone and may have changed since the document was first created, but it should help give the community an idea and something to advocate for.

Final Turner Field LCI Study Published

The final version of the LCI Study is available online for review and distribution. The biggest update seems the inclusion of Transportation, Connectivity, and Market analyses. You can find everything related to LCI study team’s findings here.

Trees Atlanta Invites Mechanicsville Residents to PlantLanta

On October 15th at 9 AM, Trees Atlanta and Atlanta City Council representatives will engage a city-wide tree planting campaign called Plantlanta. Trees Atlanta would love to get as many Mechanicsville community members out for the planting projects at Rosa L. Burney Park and the triangle at the intersection of Dodd and Pryor.  While Trees Atlanta plans on addressing both locations, the Rosa L. Burney project will require the most support (plan to meet at park entrance at Windsor and Richardson Streets).

Trees Atlanta also encourages neighborhood residents to leverage free trees that the organization is offering their their Throwin’ Shade Campaign which free front yard shade trees for all. You can find more about that program here.

Community Planning Workshop Hosted by the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation is hosting an event launching their housing initiative to provide free legal representation for tenants in the NPU-V communities. Columbia Residential Accepting Pre-Applications

Columbia Residential is accepting pre-applications for their new two, three, and four bedroom homes. To qualify, your household income must not exceed 60% of Atlanta’s Area Median Income. For reference, income thresholds are as follows:

• 1 person household: $28,350
• 2 person household: $32,400
• 3 person household: $36,450
• 4 person household: $40,500

Pre-applications period opened on August 29th at 10:00 AM and will close August 31st at 7:00 PM. Example home prices include the following:

• 2 bedrooms from $651
• 3 bedrooms from $705
• 4 bedrooms from $740

Waiting list applicants will be assigned a lottery number for selection when there are available homes.
