There will be a special election on September 17, 2019 for Atlanta Board of Education District 2 to fill the remainder of our former school board representative, Byron Amos’ term. Here are your candidates who will appear on the ballot for that election. Candidates appear below in the order in which they qualified:

Though Election Day is on Tuesday, September 17, early voting starts NEXT WEEK, from  Monday, August 26 to Friday, September 13. If there is a runoff, that election will be held on October 15, 2019.

• Tuesday, Sept 3 – Saturday, Sept 7    8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Closed Labor Day, Monday, Sept 2)

• NO Sunday Voting

If you’re not sure if you fall under ABOE D2, please know that encompasses Atlanta City Council Districts 3 and 4. This means that only Mechanicsville residents living north of Dodd Ave will be able to vote in this election. Here’s the entire ABOE D2 map.

The headwaters of Intrenchment Creek as near Turner Field, and most of NPU-V lives in, or is impacted by, what happens in the Intrenchment Creek Watershed. Concerned about clean, safe, and accessible water? Annoyed by all of the boiled water advisories? Frustrated with permeable paver maintenance? There is opportunity to have your voices be heard!

Please join the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management and our community partners at our upcoming Stormwater Roadshow Open House for Intrenchment, Sugar, & Doolittle Creeks.

The Department and several partners will host 8 Open Houses, each targeting a specific watershed. However, citizens from anywhere in Atlanta are welcome to attend any meeting, regardless of event location or where they live.

The purpose of this and future Roadshow events is to engage the residents, organizations, and businesses in each of Atlanta’s 10 watersheds. The program will focus on listening to the community to learn how the Department has succeeded, gather information about recurring stormwater issues, and gather feedback about current and future projects, and the Department’s planning processes. Each session will also include educational materials.

Come join Dunbar Elementary’s parents, students, and teachers for a 5K run/walk event which will be held in the Mechanicsville community. Proceeds go to Dunbar Elementary School. The school is looking to raise $20,000 but they need your help! The participation fee is $35, but it’s free for parents and students.

Atlanta Streets Alive opens streets for people by temporarily closing them to cars, creating a vibrant street experience and demonstrating the benefits of safe streets. The route scheduled for September 29th originally included Cascade Road and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and was supposed to terminate in West End, but the route has been modified to extend the Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. portion east all the way to Hank Aaron Drive in Summerhill. That means that ASA will be returning to Mechanicsville for the first time since 2017!

Please join us for our annual National Night Out celebration hosted by the communities of NPU-V! The event will promote community pride and safety. The event will be held on Tuesday, August 6th at 4pm and will hosted by the Mechanicsville community at Dunbar Recreation Center (477 Windsor Street SW).

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at Wednesday’s Summerhill Quarterly Meeting. The meeting starts at 6 PM at FanPlex and will feature speakers from Carter, GSU Athletics, Atlanta Technical College, and a new local business! Light refreshments will be provided.

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is developing a new strategic plan this year. To do that successfully, we’re seeking input from our members and the broader community. We have conducted interviews and focus groups – and now are gathering further input via this brief survey.

This survey is anonymous and should only take seven minutes to complete.

Insights from this survey will inform the agenda at a Community Discussion to be held Tuesday, August 6 from 6-8 pm at the M. The City of Atlanta Department of City Planning and the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. teamed up to coordinate two master planning efforts – West End Livable Centers Initiative (WELCI) and the Atlanta BeltLine Subarea 1 (SA-1) Master Plan updates. The updates represent the collective vision, policies and strategies that will guide future growth and development in the study area. We seek your input through this community survey to help understand community needs and craft a vision that will improve mobility, promote economic development, and encourage a better quality of life for all.
