NPU-V Community Support/Cure Violence Atlanta

Hello everyone

The following Cure Violence staff have been assigned to the following communities. Cure Violence staff will be able to assist with identifying community hot spots, identifying drivers of violence, community events, community clean ups, etc… As mentioned in the meeting, Cure Violence staff are not law enforcement. Our job is to identify drivers of violence, interrupt violence and provide wrap around supports for individuals looking for a positive path to journey down. In our efforts to change social norms, we aim to aid in the communities efforts to make sure residents remain safe and secure through disseminating credible information and or resources for the community to continue to thrive. Staff will be available for support, information sharing and gathering in Civic Association meetings.

The following staff are as follows:

NPU-V & Mechanicsville Neighborhood | Updates & Announcements from State Representative Stacey Evans

Hello Mechanicsville Community Leaders,

On behalf of State Representative Stacey Evans, please review the legislative updates related to your neighborhood and announcements to share with the community.  Please continue to keep me updated if there are specific concerns that we can address to ensure all residents’ voices are heard and represented.

Below, are transportation updates from Rep. Evans regarding street safety in the community as it relates to neighborhood streets.  Also attached is a flyer for a Town Hall meeting being held this Wednesday evening at 7:30PM with Representative Evans and State Senator Sonya Halpern.  Please be sure to share this with your neighborhood.  Thanks so much!

A.  Transportation Updates:

Rep. Evans held a meeting on Friday, January 22 regarding the Department of Transportation which addressed several concerns as requested for Mechanicsville:

(1) There is a discussion underway about installing a ROUNDABOUT at Metropolitan Pkwy & RDA (PI 0016390).  Help me to understand more about the plan and the progress/expected timeline/etc.

  • Yes, this is underway and is in scoping /concept approval stage
  • Project is not yet funded
  • Part of scoping is environmental study stage, that is happening now
  • Scoping also includes utility and right of way acquisition
  • Probably a 3–4-year schedule after scoping stage is complete

(2) SPEED BUMPS are needed Ralph David Abernathy (varied cross street info)

  • Can’t put speed bumps on state routes because they are made for transport and the speeds are not conducive to speed bumps being effective
  • Working on other ways to reduce speed – potentially lane reductions; GDOT has this road on its upcoming long-term study list

(3) A LEFT TURN SIGNAL is needed when turning onto Ralph David Abernathy from Cascade Avenue

  • If a left turn signal is put in this location, it creates a conflict because of other lanes and signals at that intersection
  • GDOT is working with City (required to because Cascade Avenue is a city road) to work toward creating a dedicated left turn lane, which would then allow the use of a left turn signal

(4) I-20 ON/OFF RAMP at Windsor Street – is there anything that can be done to make the area safer for pedestrians and bikers?

  • There are areas for improvement here and they appreciate us pointing out the problems
  • They will begin a study on this area
  • They are pulling pedestrian crash data
  • Will work on ADA compliance issues and other engineering to make better for bikes and pedestrians
  • Will also work on adding more street signs
  • Allow the department approximately 30-60 days to conduct a study and then will work on recommended improvements

CALL TO ACTION: Demand 30-day extension of public comment period

The new draft NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) for the City of Atlanta combined sewer system was posted for public comment on December 31, 2020. The 30-day comment period expires February 1, 2021. This permit, once approved by Georgia EPD, will regulate how Atlanta’s combined sewer system will be managed for the next five years. This permit contains a number of major changes from the previous 2015 NPDES permit that highlight existing water quality issues and will have huge implications for water quality in Intrenchment Creek and the South River.

Please send a comment to GA EPD and demand at least a 30-day extension of the public comment period. Below are a few points for your consideration.  No need for a long comment, simply highlight one issue and put it in your own words.

Send comments to EPDcomments@dnr.ga.gov., NPDES Permit No. GA0037168.

1) Constructing valid and defensible comments (which is required if there is any expectation that EPD will act upon those comments) requires access to and review of information such as sampling plans and data related to implementation of the 2015 NPDES permit. Securing these data requires time consuming open records requests in addition to lengthy analysis.  The public requires as much consideration as was given the City of Atlanta in the development of their draft permit.

2) The December 31, 2020 timing for the release of the draft comment could not have been more insensitive to the potential negative impacts of other competing and equally important demands on the time and attention of individuals who otherwise would have likely participated in this important public comment opportunity.

3) The current 2015 permit expired on September 1, 2020 and has been administratively extended since that date. Atlanta’s 2005 NPDES permit was administratively extended from 2010 to 2015, five years. There is no defensible reason why the public comment period cannot be extended for at least an additional 30-days.

ActivateATL – Public Meetings | Department of Parks and Recreation

Hello Columbus,

I hope you are doing well! I’m excited to share that the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation has kicked off its second round of public engagement for ActivateATL, its 10-year comprehensive master planning effort. Click here to visit project website!

Thousands of Atlantans took part in our Summer 2020 Public Meetings. If you recall, those public meetings were focused on learning about communities’ needs for Atlanta’s parks and recreation system and identifying room for growth and improvement.

Over the last few months, the ActivateATL project team has analyzed the feedback collected from public meetings, surveys, social media, focus groups, app, and more, and identified strategies to both address challenges and guide the Department’s growth moving forward.

In February 2021, we will host our final series of Virtual Public Meetings, and you’re invited to share feedback on the draft vision and recommended strategies.

I’ve attached to this email an updated flier for ActivateATL, which includes upcoming public meeting dates. We are also staying connected with the community via our monthly e-newsletter, and our new app, HappiFeet – Atlanta Parks.

We would appreciate if you could share this information within your networks – we want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard!
